About Me
I'm a Technical Architect specializing in healthcare interoperability, with deep expertise in HL7 FHIR, CDA, and cross-border healthcare data exchange.
Background
I work at the intersection of healthcare, standards, and practical software delivery. I'm a full-stack web developer working as a Technical Architect, based in Clane, Ireland. I enjoy coding and problem-solving, but most of all, I enjoy being part of a much bigger team.
My focus is on making complex interoperability problems understandable and building systems that work reliably in production. I work with the Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland, leading technical architecture for healthcare interoperability initiatives including Ireland's implementation of MyHealth@EU for cross-border patient data exchange.

- Java - Healthcare integration servers and tools
- Data - PostgreSQL, MongoDB, data modeling for healthcare
- DevOps - Docker, CI/CD, containerization
Approach
I believe in:
- Standards-based solutions that enable interoperability
- Clear documentation that makes complex topics accessible
- Practical delivery over theoretical perfection
- Developer experience as a key success factor
- Security and privacy by design
Healthcare Standards & European Initiatives
I work extensively with European healthcare interoperability initiatives and open standards for cross-border health data exchange
Standards I work with: HL7 FHIR®, HL7 CDA®, IHE Profiles (XDS, XCA), DICOM, SNOMED CT, LOINC, and European Health Data Space (EHDS) specifications.

Current Focus
My current work involves:
- Leading technical architecture for Ireland's MyHealth@EU implementation as part of the European Health Data Space (EHDS)
- Contributing to Xt-EHR (European Health Data Space project) across multiple work packages:
- WP6.1: Patient Summaries towards EHDS
- WP6.2: Electronic Prescriptions and Dispensations
- WP7.1: Laboratory Results and Reports
- WP7.2: Medical Imaging and Reports
- Establishing FHIR as the primary integration standard for HSE systems
- Designing API platforms and developer tools for healthcare integration
- Active participation in European healthcare interoperability working groups and standards development
MyHealth@EU: Cross-Border Healthcare in Europe
Leading the technical architecture for Ireland's National Contact Point (NCP) for eHealth, enabling secure cross-border exchange of healthcare data across the European Union. MyHealth@EU is the operational service supporting the European Health Data Space Regulation.
Current Services:
- Patient Summary - Essential medical information for treatment abroad
- ePrescription/eDispensation - Cross-border medication prescribing and dispensing
Future Services (in development with Xt-EHR):
- Laboratory results and reports
- Hospital discharge reports
- Medical images (X-rays, MRI, CT scans)
National Infrastructure & Standards
Contributing to Ireland's foundational interoperability infrastructure:
- National Medicinal Product Catalogue (NMPC) - Testing and evaluation of national medication management API using SNOMED CT terminology, supporting integrated medicine management across primary and secondary care
- Central Terminology Server (CTS) - Evaluation of FHIR terminology service providing SNOMED CT and Irish clinical reference sets for standardized clinical data representation
These services provide the foundational terminology and medication infrastructure that enables MyHealth@EU ePrescription services and FHIR-based integration across Irish healthcare systems.
Xt-EHR Project: Building EHDS Technical Specifications
The Xt-EHR project develops the technical specifications and implementation guides that services like MyHealth@EU implement. Contributing to multiple work packages developing FHIR-based standards for:
- Patient Summaries (WP6.1) - Core patient data for cross-border exchange
- Electronic Prescriptions & Dispensations (WP6.2) - Medication workflows and safety
- Laboratory Results (WP7.1) - Diagnostic test results using LOINC, NPU, and SNOMED CT
- Medical Imaging Reports (WP7.2) - Radiology reports using HL7 FHIR and DICOM standards
Certifications & Professional Development
Continuous learning in healthcare interoperability standards and technical architecture:
- openEHR & HL7 FHIR Technical Course - Better (openEHR & HL7 FHIR collaboration), May 2026
Standards Development & Working Groups
Active participation in European and international healthcare standards development:
- HL7 Europe - Medication Prescription and Dispense Working Group - Contributing to FHIR Implementation Guide development for European exchange format (EEHRxF) under EHDS Regulation, in collaboration with IHE and European projects (XpanDH, Xt-EHR, xShare, UNICOM)
- Xt-EHR Project Working Groups - Active contributor to WP6.1, 6.2, 7.1, and 7.2 technical specifications
- European eHealth Network - Technical representation in EHDS implementation discussions
- MyHealth@EU Community - Collaboration with Member States on cross-border data exchange
